PEN International

PEN International is a global association of writers in over 100 countries working to promote literature co-operation among writers as well as promoting literature freedom and freedom of expression.

IFEX (International Freedom of Expression Exchange)

IFEX is a network of groups working together to defend and promote free expression as a fundamental human right. They are currently made up of 119 independent NGOs working at the local, national, regional, and international level on freedom of expression.

African Centre for Media Excellence

“The African Centre for Media Excellence is a Kampala-based independent, non-profit professional organisation that is committed to excellence in journalism and mass communication in Africa.

ACME’s main goal is to make the media a more effective platform for the provision of information on public affairs, a tool for monitoring official power, and a forum for vibrant public debate.”

The site contains both research and publications as well as online resources for journalists on issues related to freedom of expression, human rights, regional affairs and more. The organisation also offers training opportunities for journalists in Africa.

Collaboration on International ICT Policy in East and Southern Africa (CIPESA)

CIPESA is a leading centre for research and analysis for policymakers and various stakeholders in Africa on the use of ICT to improve livelihoods. They produce work and guidance on the internet and freedom of the media in the digital age, promote online freedoms in Africa, and each year they produce the ‘State of Internet Freedom in Africa’ report.

ARTICLE 19

Article 19 is a non-governmental organisation working to secure the right to freedom of expression and right to access information for everyone. Each year they produce a report on the status of freedom of expression globally.

International Committee of the Red Cross

The International Committee of the Red Cross is the leading international organisation on humanitarian law and assistance in situations of armed conflict and violence. Their website contains useful resources on international humanitarian law and information on their work.

Transparency International

Transparency International is an international non-governmental organisation who work with governments, businesses, and citizens to combat corruption. Each year they publish the Corruption Perceptions Index scoring countries on how corrupt their public sectors are seen to be.

FOKUS (Forum for Women and Development)

FOKUS – Forum for Women and Development – works to promote women’s empowerment, rights and access to resources. Through advocacy and international development cooperation, the organisation works to strengthen women’s human rights and participation in society.

European Wergeland Centre

The European Wergeland Centre was established by the Council of Europe and Norway in 2008 and serves all 47 member states. The Centre promotes education for democracy and human rights by:

  • Providing capacity building for people involved in or with education
  • Cooperating with national authorities, developing programmes responding to their priorities
  • Supporting and applying research in the field
  • Contributing to policy development in the Council of Europe and its member states
  • Disseminating information and serving as a platform and meeting place

World Coalition against the Death Penalty

The World Coalition against the Death Penalty is an alliance of more than 150 NGOs, bar associations, local authorities, and unions. The aim of the World Coalition is to strengthen the international dimension of the fight against the death penalty. Its ultimate objective is to obtain the universal abolition of the death penalty.

Africa Freedom of Information Centre

Africa Freedom of Information Centre “AFIC” is a pan-African NGO and resource centre that promotes the right of access to information through comparative research, coordinating regional advocacy, facilitating information-sharing and capacity building.

Mo Ibrahim Foundation

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation (MIF) is an African foundation, established in 2006 with a focus on the critical importance of governance and leadership in Africa. The Foundation focuses on defining, assessing and enhancing governance and leadership in Africa through four main initiatives:

  • Ibrahim Forum
  • Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership

Freedom House

Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization dedicated to the expansion of freedom and democracy around the world. They analyze the challenges to freedom, advocate for greater political rights and civil liberties, and support frontline activists to defend human rights and promote democratic change. Each year they release the Freedom in the World report which maps civil and political rights in all countries across the world. In addition, they issue yearly reports on Freedom in the Press and Freedom on the Net reporting on media independence and internet freedom around the world respectively.
